The combination of professionalism, knowledge and innovation to provide eye care solutions
“We see our dentist every six months, so why can’t we see our optometrist as often?” Datuk Murphy Chan, the CEO of Eyecon Optometry Network asks. “Eye check-ups are even more important for contact lens users as they give you an idea of the overall condition of your eye health and the type of contact lens you should use. Similar to taking prescribed medicines – the prescription from last year might be harmful if you take them this year.”
As the name suggests, Eyecon Optometry is a network where all eye care professionals work together with the same values and passion to provide the best eye care solutions to their patients. “The Eyecon Optometry Network is committed to providing services above and beyond the ordinary,” says Datuk Murphy.
“The aim is to create a network of optometrists that carry the same ideology so we can raise the standard of eye care services across the region,” he continues.
Giving back to the community
The Eyecon Optometry Network is also known for their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR). The network owns a mobile vision ambulance that provides public education on eye health and basic screening services. “We implemented our CSR initiative to help people learn about and prioritize their eye health in order to live better lives. It comes back to our primary mission – not to sell products but to help the public see the world in a better light, literally; to bring meaning into their lives” he says.
“To help raise the awareness of eye care, we came up with innovative techniques to get our message across. For example, we’ve utilised the Edutainment method for children by showing them an animation on how to better care for their eyes,” he continues.
“According to research, sight is considered the most important sense. When we see better, we learn better and we remember better,” he says.
“Last Eid, we helped a group of elderly patients by giving each of them a new pair of glasses. The idea is to help them build long lasting, vivid memories with their grandchildren. I believe in the joy of giving. I want to make each staff member of Eyecon Optometry to understand the joy of making a significant difference in someone’s life.”
“Our CSR initiatives are always done with an innovative idea. We took the time to brainstorm and plan on how to make our CSR impactful to the ones we’re planning to help. As the leading optometrist network in Malaysia we believe it is our obligation to to give back to our community” Datuk Murphy says with a warm smile.
Working with technology
Technological advancement in the optometry field has shown a monumental leap over the last decade. However, the visionary founder of Eyecon believes that simply possessing state-of-the-art equipment is not enough to run an optometry network.
According to Datuk Murphy, the combination between professionalism, kowledge, and innovation is the key towards improving the eye care service industry.
“We believe in delivering the best value to our patients and we can only achieve that by combining these two aspects together. Our examination rooms provide a clinical yet comfortable environment for our patients. Our equipment fulfils the innovation portion of our service.”
However, the devices are useless without the brains behind them.
“That is why all staff must undertake continuous education and training to improve their skills and knowledge. Our teams of professional staff and our innovative technology must come hand in hand in order to provide the best service to our patients.”
Unorthodox training for staff
Datuk Murphy has unconventional training methods he thinks can strengthen his staff’s overall professionalism.
“Our staff were encouraged to go for a fine dining experience to learn the importance of paying attention to detail and carefully following procedures. We even had a body language instructor to teach them how to best present themselves to patients with professionalism, confidence and care. It’s a transformation that our staff must undergo in order to have the sensitivity of a service provider.”
Partnering to provide the best
Eyecon optometry in Ayer Keroh, Melaka is one of many optometry centres partnering with Johnson & Johnson Vision. Datuk Murphy puts his patients’ wellbeing as his top priority, therefore he has ensured to have a wide range of products to offer to his patients.
“The ACUVUE® brand of contact lenses has proven to be one of the best in providing excellent quality and variety. With a strong track record and many happy patients, we are confident to offer our patients with these contact lenses.” — The Health
