Chan May May is an optometrist who goes beyond the call of duty for the sake of her customers
IS EYE care anywhere near the top of our health priority list? The answer would probably be a “No”.
So, how important are our eyes?
Taking proper care of them is vital, according to optometrist Chan May May.
Coming from a family of optometrists, she helms the Chan May May Optometrist practice in the busy town of Pulau Tikus, Penang. With over 20 years of experience in eye care, her practice boasts a variety of sophisticated optometric equipment such as a wide-angle retinal imager to facilitate more comprehensive eye examinations.
“An optometrist’s duties aren’t just limited to prescribing and dispensing corrective lenses. We also help in detecting eye diseases. After all, the eyes are the only place in the body where we can directly look at your blood vessels to check for signs of diabetes or high blood pressure without resorting to invasive procedures.”
Furthermore, Chan is committed to providing more than basic optometry services. Having furthered her studies, she is now a behavioural optometrist.
This means she can help kids with reading difficulties, strabismus (cross-eyed) patients and patients suffering from brain injuries such as sixth nerve palsy and concussion.
Researchers estimate nearly two billion people worldwide have presbyopia, a progressive decline in the ability to focus on objects up close, especially fine print in low light conditions.
“Ten years ago, my customers who came in with presbyopia were mostly 40 years old and above. Now I have customers coming in with presbyopia at the age of 30,” Chan exclaims.
She believes the onslaught of presbyopia amongst young adults is due to excessive usage of mobile phones and other electronic devices.
According to her, signs of presbyopia are usually tiredness, headache and eye twitching. Fortunately, her optometric experience coupled with the development of specialist lenses for the management of presbyopia means all is not lost.
There is a comprehensive process before fitting on a pair of lenses at the store. The customer’s eye condition must first be checked to observe whether there are any diseases, and the multifocal trial contact lenses are fitted.
Providing care and comfort
Four walls clearly aren’t enough to confine Chan’s passion and expertise. A member and former president of the Lion’s Club in Penang, she often gets herself involved in volunteer work.
“I make it a point to arrange and participate in eye health screening events for the community. My role at such events is to detect eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma and other visual issues.
“I believe every optometrist needs to adhere to the primary eye care routine as it is an integral part of primary health care. I continuously aspire to provide my patients with comprehensive eye care services and quality products so that they can have a better vision and thus a better quality of life.
“I cannot emphasise enough the importance of an annual eye exam. An eye exam goes beyond checking your eye power. It enables us to check for any possible eye related issue in our patients. If detected, we can refer you to the eye specialist before the condition progresses. Do not wait till it’s too late to see an eye doctor. After all prevention is better than cure,” Chan concluded.— The Health
